A view over our raised beds. We are growing: potatoes, carrots, beetroot, leeks, peas, beans and brassicas. The three empty beds on the left are for the squash and courgette crop, to be planted in May. Chris and Aaron are tending the tree nursery bed

Previously couch grass and buttercup. This area was mulched in autumn 2007, using cardboard with green waste compost on top. Comfrey, applemint, Nepalese raspberry were planted and some self-seeders have made themselves at home.

Every autumn we rake the leaves along the track - thankfully downhill - to the growing area and pile them up. Half rotted leaves make an excellent mulch and soil additive for growing tree seedlings. Try it for yourself!
